Disease/Disability Information

Programs that provide information about the etiology, symptoms, preventive measures, screening/diagnostic procedures, and/or methods of treatment or management for specific illnesses or disabling conditions; and/or which disseminate information about the latest research with regard to a particular illness or condition. Included are programs that maintain disease registries, i.e., databases that contain information about people who have been diagnosed with a specific type of disease and have been treated by a particular hospital or live within a particular geographic area. Registry information is used by public health authorities to identify and investigate unusual patterns of occurrence of the disease and can help communities plan for and deliver needed medical services.

Alzheimer's Disease Education and Referral (ADEAR) Center The Alzheimer's Disease Education and Referral (ADEAR) Center is a service of the National Institute on Aging (NIA), one of the Federal Government's National Institutes of Health and part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The NIA conducts and supports research about health issues for older people, and is the primary Federal agency for Alzheimer's disease research.

As a public, U.S. Government-funded resource, the ADEAR Center strives to be a current, comprehensive, unbiased source of information about Alzheimer's disease. All our information and materials about the search for causes, treatment, cures, and better diagnostic tools are carefully researched and thoroughly reviewed by NIA scientists and health communicators for accuracy and integrity.

Blind or Visually Impaired Services & Information Hotline To enable people who are blind or visually impaired to achieve equality of access and opportunity that will ensure freedom of choice in their lives. Also supplies non-medical information on visual impairments and blindness and answers queries regarding AFB services, products, publications, technology. Caregiver Support and Information The Family Caregiver Alliance offers caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's Disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's Disease, ALS, and related brain disorders practical information on topics such as care planning, stress relief, and community resources.

Education & Training: Caregiver workshops, research presentations, professional training and public policy conferences.

National Center on Caregiving: A program of Family Caregiver Alliance, the NCC is a central source of information and technical assistance on caregiving and long-term-care for policy makers, health and service providers, media, program developers, funders and families. The center's research and publications document emerging trends and caregiver needs and services throughout the country.

HIV/AIDS Education, Resources, Assistance for Health Care Workers Education, resources and assistance to health care workers who care for people with HIV/AIDS. National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) supports individuals and families affected by eating disorders, and serves as a catalyst for prevention, cures and access to quality care.

Overcoming an eating disorder takes professional help, but it is also important to have a strong support team. Whether you have been personally affected by an eating disorder or care about someone who has, NEDA's programs and services are designed to help you find the help and support you need.

National Herpes Hotline Provides accurate information and appropriate referrals to anyone concerned about herpes. Trained Health Communication Specialists are available to address questions related to transmission, prevention and treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV). The NHH also provides support for emotional issues surrounding herpes such as self-esteem and partner communication. Respite Care for Families Camp Lotsafun allows special needs children, teens and adults to participate in camping activities while giving parents and caregivers the opportunity to enjoy respite care.

Families with children, teens, and adults with disabilities are in desperate need of respite services to provide relief for the families and caregivers and to provide age appropriate recreational and social opportunities for the participants. Due to the additional requirements of a child with a disability, families identify respite care as a basic need. Parents of a child with a disability experience amplified levels of stress due to the increased demands a child with a disability places on the family. Siblings of a family member with a disability experience stress and often receive less attention due to the additional needs of their sibling. Camp Lotsafun allows families and caregivers to take a break from the daily routine of caregiving.
